Families across the Borough will have an unforgettable start to their summer holidays as our iconic River Festival returns.
Over Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July 2024, a cultural extravaganza will be taking place that celebrates the vibrant communities, businesses and heritage that make Bedford, Bedford.
So, what’s on the itinerary?
Of course, familiar attractions and events such as the Dragon boats, water sports/arena and funfair will be returning, however, this is a celebration of what makes Bedford Borough truly exceptional – we cannot stagnate, falling into a “holding pattern” of doing the same thing every 2 years.
That’s not very Bedfordian, instead, the question now becomes how we make the largest free festival in the UK even bigger and better, and the truth is, by listening to our residents, communities and businesses that form the backbone of this Borough.
Some ideas have come to fruition and the River Festival will now have a new crazy golf course and Green Earth Village on Castle Mound which will offer an Eco Forest as well as talks and workshops for children alongside performances, food and art.
However, by far the most requested, talked about or suggested ideas, were about making the festival more family-friendly for young families visiting far and wide.
Well, we have listened and for the first time, St. Mary’s Gardens will be transformed into the Family Island with a wide range of activities that include but are not limited to:
- Dance workshops
- Storytelling and sensory activities
- Arts and crafts
There will also be a calm and sensory-friendly environment for families with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
I can say with all these improvements this year’s River Festival is shaping up to be amazing and one to truly remember.
I look forward to seeing you all there.
